Grid computing, which is a high-performance computing paradigm of growing importance in research, enables the sharing of computer resources — compute nodes, storage, and even research equipment — between organizations. Like any other computer architecture, grid computing has its own tools and concepts for computer security. And when it comes to grid security, several questions come to mind: How is a user authorized on the grid? What is a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and how is it implemented? What is a grid certificate, a grid proxy? How is a grid account created?

This talk will address these questions by presenting an overview of the Grid Security Infrastructure (GSI) that underlies Globus software, using a GSI-enabled version of SSH as an example. Seminar participants with SSH installed on their computers will be provided with instruction on how to follow along with hands-on examples during the presentation.

Globus software is part of the the Grid Research Integration Deployment and Support (GRIDS) Center Software Suite. The GRIDS Center, a project of the National Middleware Initiative of NSF, is a partnership of five leading supercomputing institutions, and its goal is to define, develop, deploy and support an integrated national middleware infrastructure that sustains science and engineering applications for the twenty-first century.

The Cyberinfrastructure Seminar Series is a set of presentations on cyberinfrastructure and related research organized by NCSA and SDSC. These seminars are available on site at the presenting institution and remotely via the Access Grid. All Access Grid sites are welcome to participate in this seminar. If you have any questions about this seminar, contact the NCSA Training Group.
