AV Features

Control of iPhone, iPod and Video Playback
The DNX6960 is compatible with iPhone and iPod models as well as video playback. In addition to conventional searches for playlists, artists, albums and genres, additional search commands can also be performed for music videos, TV shows, movies, video playlists, etc. via the convenience of Voice Control Command.

Flick Through and Browse
A function similar to iPod?s Cover Flow is now featured on the DNX6960, allowing users to flick through and browse for music albums, video titles, photographs, etc. on connected media; the contents or titles of selected sources on the screen can also be viewed.

Split Screen
An improved GUI makes split-screen operation easier to operate. For example, the split screen displays two different screens side by side while the primary and secondary screens allow you to toggle between two frequently used screens via touch-screen operation.

Built-in Bluetooth
The eXcelon DNX6960 comes equipped with built-in Bluetooth capability to enable handsfree operation so you can keep your hands on the steering wheel where they belong and concentrate on the road ahead.

6.1-Inch Touchscreen with Variable Illumination
The DNX6960 puts intuitive control right at your fingertips with its 6.1" TFT Active Matrix Display and powerful, easy-to-use graphical user interface. Customize the unit's front panel illumination by choosing from a large palette of colors--match your interior tones, dash lighting, or whatever tickles your fancy. Selectable wallpapers and customizable backgrounds offer further personalization.

Enjoy Your Favorite Media
The DNX6960 is a media powerhouse, letting you play your favorite CDs and DVDs, along with several digital audio and video formats. The unit accepts DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD and DTS-CD discs. It plays back AAC, MP3 and WMA audio files; MPEG1 video files; and can display JPEG images. Throw your files on a disc or a USB device and enjoy them in your vehicle wherever you are.

And of course, you can still listen to the AM/FM radio. Use Auto Memory to automatically add stations with good reception to presets, or enter them manually. The DNX6960 displays FM radio text when available, traffic information, and allows you to enter station names.

USB Direct Control
You can enjoy your favorite music, video or images from USB devices like flash drives or MP3 players. When connecting a USB device, playback starts automatically. When a battery-powered USB device like an MP3 player is connected to this unit, it also gets a charge, so it's ready to go with you when you exit the vehicle.

Input and Output
In addition to the iPod and USB support, you can use the DNX6960's front auxiliary A/V input to connect external audio/video sources like video game systems.

The unit also features an A/V output for sending content to an additional screen in the vehicle.

Plenty of Power, Room to Grow
The DNX6960 features an on-board 50W x 4 MOSFET amplifier, but also offers three sets of 5V preamp outputs (front/rear/subwoofer) for building your system.

System E's+ Crossover System
A single IC that allows the user to select from 8 different high-pass filter crossover frequencies plus pass-through, with independent selection for front and rear outputs. This makes it easy to optimize the performance of all amps and speakers in a car audio system without needing an external electronic crossover. System E's+ also incorporates a phase switch and low-pass filter for the non-fading output. The low-pass filter has selectable cutoff frequencies of 50Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz and Through.

System Q EX Sound Control
Five factory pre-set equalization curves (Rock, Top40, Pops, Jazz and Easy, plus a flat setting) and three speaker matching curves (OEM, 6x9, 5/4 plus a flat setting) that can be combined to give the user extreme flexibility over the sound's tonal character. The preset curves include midrange contouring, giving music more clarity and presence. System Q EX allows the user to modify the preset curves by changing the amplitude of the bass, midrange and treble compensation, and the Q of the bass and midrange compensation. The new curves can then be saved as presets for future recall

HD and SAT Radio Ready
The DNX6960 allows you to enjoy SIRIUS (requires CA-SR20V cable + Sirius Tuner) or XM (requires KCA-XM100V + XM Mini Tuner) radio in your vehicle. Enjoy a multitude of channels featuring music, news, talk shows, sports and traffic information with CD quality sound.

You can also add an HD Radio tuner (requires KTC-HR300). When you connect an HD Radio, Tuner features of the unit are disabled and changed to HD Radio tuner features.

Rear Camera Input
The DNX6960 is ready for a rear camera, allowing you to monitor behind your vehicle as you back up.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD UNIT   August 22, 2010
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I purchased this unit about six months ago and installed it in my 2004 Chevy Silverado myself. I have been impressed with it's functionality and capabilities (Navigation, Rear/Back-up Camera, Blue-tooth cell phone connection, iPod, etc. This unit also plays DVD movies, but I certainly wouldn't recommend that while driving.). The only issue I've had is that I have not been able to get the collar fitting to fit between the head unit and the factory dash piece so I have an awkward gap between the two. (Note: the iPod connection does require an additional cable that is NOT provided with this unit.)

2 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE iPod integration!!   June 23, 2010

After installing this head unit in my 2008 Ford F150 I got very excited. This really is a classy head unit in most respects. I've got my phone paired with the Bluetooth, the navigation seems very nice, Sirius radio sounds very good, even my steering wheel controls seem to work decently with the PAC SWIJACK, but... I used the Kennwood KCA-IP301V adapter to control my 120 GB iPod Classic. Immediately I noticed that it takes anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds (more often closer to 10) to switch forward or backward between songs, or to choose the songs from the list menu. Basically whenever you switch songs the unit freezes for the 10 seconds or whatever, and then resumes. Album artwork loads just as slowly too, which I really wouldn't mind being quicker, but would sacrifice in a heartbeat if it meant I could navigate between songs quicker. Also, when trying to navigate through my music using the A-Z menu, only about half of the letters actually brings up music that starts with that letter (M gets you O, P gets you R, but L might actually get you L, etc.) In essence, it's nearly impossible to listen to your music without going crazy. It can literally take you up to a full minute to try and skip ahead 6 songs!!! Try to press track advance twice (which you WILL unconsciously do when the unit doesn't respond after the first press} and then it freezes up for the 10 seconds, then skips ahead twice - which is fine if that's what you want, but often I only wanted one song skipped, so you have to press the back button, which starts the 10 second clock all over again! I called Kenwood tech support and was told that this particular new line of head units (2010 I assume) does indeed process iPod functions slower that past year's models. I was not able to confirm that a software fix might be coming later on, only that the current slow operation is "normal" for this particular lineup. Maybe a software update is coming, maybe not. Who knows?

In closing, if you intend to use your iPod like I do (my CDs never even leave the house any more), then this head unit isn't even worth the trivial price you'd pay to have it shipped to you. If you don't use iPod, then I can't imagine you being unhappy with it.

I would give this product less than one star, but I think if you leave the iPod issues out of the picture, it's a GREAT player. But if you're like me and your entire music collection is on your iPod, AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Shame on you, Kenwood.

UPDATE - I purchased a brand new 64GB iPod Touch and it had the same issues with this head unit as my older iPod Classic. I have returned the unit. An awful first experience owing a Kenwood product.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect head unit   May 29, 2010

I originally chose this unit because I have a car with the Alpine IVA-W505 and although I like the quality the features are lacking extremely. I am a computer programmer and if I may say the user interface of the DNX6960 is awesome. Very well laid out, sources are easily accessible and the touch screen is very responsive.

The built in blue tooth is also awesome! I love the fact that I don't have to touch my cell phone when I get in the car and when the phone rings the caller id pops up on screen and the music stops. Everything integrates so well it is in my opinion an almost perfect blend of multimedia options.

The reason it does not get a perfect five stars is that using the equalizer is a little tedious and to get the best sound out of it is not that easy. The sound quality out of the box in my opinion is less than stellar and you are better off relying on crossovers on your amp etc. Perhaps good sound is acheivable within the unit itself but it is not apparent to an audiophile like myself.

Overall though it is still one of, if not THE BEST head units I have ever had and I have had them all from Pioneer and Eclipse to Alpine and Clarion.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad   May 16, 2010

I replaced the Factory unit on my Chevy Truck with this one. The things I love: The bluetooth, Navigation, and sound quality. I love it. I added on the Kenwood CMOS rearview camera and it is awesome.
What I don't like: You cant hide the sources you don't use. So if you don't have Sirius or a Video source, it would be nice to hide them so when you scroll through sources they aren't there. I also miss my clock. The only clock on this radio is a tiny little display at the top right, and there is no clock when navigating. Also, I used an Axxess AWSC steering control interface. It works great except Kenwood doesn't seem to have the option to move from Tuner preset to the next. I would like to see that built in so the PROG button on my steering wheel can move from one preset station to the next, like the factory GM stereos do. It is amazing how much I miss being able to scroll through my favorite stations using my steering wheel.
